When Do You Need a Safety Inspection?
A Safety Standard Certificate is a mandatory document required by Service Ontario in several common situations. You will need to have your vehicle pass a safety inspection if you are:
-
Transferring Ownership: Selling or buying a used vehicle (spousal transfers are typically exempt).
-
Registering a Vehicle from Out-of-Province: Bringing a car, truck, or motorcycle into Ontario to be registered.
-
Registering a Rebuilt Vehicle: Putting a vehicle with a “rebuilt” status back on the road.
-
Changing Vehicle Status: Upgrading a vehicle’s status from “unfit” to “fit.”
If you’re unsure whether your situation requires a safety certificate, give our knowledgeable team a call. We’re happy to help.
Our Inspection Process: What to Expect
We believe in a transparent and straightforward process. Here’s how we work:
- Comprehensive MTO-Standard Inspection: Our licensed technician will conduct a detailed, point-by-point inspection of your vehicle’s key systems as required by the MTO. This includes brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, exhaust, and the vehicle’s frame.
- Detailed Report: Once the inspection is complete, we provide you with a clear, easy-to-understand report. We will walk you through the results and answer any questions you have.
- Issuing Your Certificate: If your vehicle meets all the required standards, we will issue your official Safety Standard Certificate on the spot.
- Clear Next Steps: If your vehicle does not pass, we will provide a no-obligation estimate detailing exactly what repairs are needed to meet the standards. You are in complete control of how you wish to proceed.
How long does a safety inspection take?
A typical inspection takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete thoroughly.
What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
We will provide you with a detailed list of the required repairs and an estimate. If the necessary repairs are completed, you have 10 days to return for a re-inspection of only the failed items, often at a reduced cost.
How long is a Safety Standard Certificate valid for?
An SSC is valid for 36 days from the date of the inspection. You must register your vehicle within this window.
Is a safety inspection the same as an emissions test?
No. A safety inspection ensures the vehicle is mechanically fit and safe to drive. The Drive Clean emissions testing program was cancelled for light-duty vehicles in Ontario as of 2019.
